Assess

At Canada Gold - Winnipeg, we believe in full transparency. That’s why every step of our evaluation process is done with you there in the room, with clear explanations and no hidden fees.

Step 1: Visual Inspection & Karat Verification

We start by examining hallmarks, evaluating craftsmanship, and sorting your items by karat. This careful assessment guides our testing process and ensures each piece is accurately valued.

Step 2: Testing

Acid Scratch Test

For jewellery and scrap gold, we use a traditional, reliable acid scratch test:

  • A small streak is made on a touchstone
  • Different acid solutions are applied to verify karat purity
  • Results are immediate and explained to you in a clear way
Touchstone slate and rare earth magnets
Density machine, also known as a specific gravity machine
Specific Gravity Test

To verify density and detect non-gold components, we may employ specific gravity test:

    • Items are weighed in air and in water
    • We calculate density to confirm authenticity and purity
    • No damage is done to your item

This test is especially useful for coins, bars, and heavier pieces.

    XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) Analysis

If our visual inspection and initial tests don’t give a definitive result, we use X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to analyze the metal content.

XRF is especially effective for testing small or intricate items such as fine chains, earrings, or dental gold that are difficult to assess using traditional methods.

The scan provides a detailed breakdown of your item’s composition, including the exact percentage of gold and any other metals like copper, silver, or zinc.

    Step 3: Precise Digital Weighing

Once testing and sorting are complete, your items are weighed on a calibrated precision scale. You’re welcome to observe this process, and if you’d like, we can photograph the results for you. If you have only a few items, we can also weigh pieces individually for full transparency.
